FOR SALE 1861 Colt Repro Rifled Musket

A fine reproduction of the Civil War musket. Stock is one piece and very nice. Has been hunted with and handled -- I shot it a bit. Has been thoroughly cleaned after each use and I taught it to shoot round ball as I got older and the recoil got rougher. Open heart surgery now precludes hunting...

    Big Sky 1952

Pretty good movie on TCM today. Big Sky with Kirk Douglas. Lots of original flintlocks, and generally well done. Hope they run it again soon.

    1861 Bridesburg

I bought this sportorized musket in 1979 in Ray Mitchell's gun shop in East Wilder NH for $85. I sold it years later for more than twice that. It had obviously been well used after its Civil War service, but the workings of the lock were as new. Wish I still had it -- a real testament to the...

Dry lubed patches per Dutch Schoultz

Went shooting on Wednesday with dry lubed patches per Dutch Schoultz system. Recovered patches all looked like this after a year being stored in a zip locked bag, which is pretty darn good in my estimation. I was shooting 50 grains of ffg Swiss behind a .568 rb cast from scrounged range lead in...

    Wayne Cheney

I went to a shoot in Groveton NH in the fall of 1979 and this old boy was taking orders for his underhammer pistol. I believe he was asking $150. Silly me didn't order one. [/img]

    Sgt. York

As I type I'm watching Sergeant York on AMC. Anybody got a clue about the 3/4 stock longrifle Gary Cooper carries. The ramrod extends 3 or 4 inches beyond the muzzle, and the lock looks like it's off a civil war musket. Turkey shoot scene is very cool.

    American Experience

Today is Robert E. Lee's birthday. I celebrated by watching this video biography on the American Experience website. Very well done. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/lee/player/

    The Crossing

Caught "The Crossing" last night starring Jeff Daniels on Verizon cable. Haven't seen it in a long time, but well worth a repeat. One of the finest American Revolution movies, in my opinion, done by Hallmark, and very appropriately aired on Christmas night. It tells the tale of Washington's...

    Civil War Experiences

I was given a Kindle for my birthday and found this book in the Kindle store for free -- Civil War Experiences under Bayard, Gregg, Kilpatrick, Custer, Raulston, and Newberry, by Henry C. Meyer. This guy joined the cavalry in New York City as a private and went on to become a Brevet Major, was...

    The Rifled Musket

Just found a copy of the book the Rifled Musket by Claud E. Fuller. A must for musket shooters. Of particular interest are the excerpts from the Ordnace Manual issued to Union soldiers, with disassembly instructions, cleaning instructions and lots of diagrams of parts. Good stuff!

    Seargent York

Just finished watching the shooting match in the 1941 movie Seargent York. The best portrayal of a rifle match in any movie I can think of. And all the guns are original -- this movie was made 20 years before the Civil War Centennial and the craze of reproductions. Remarkable stuff.

    Rifled musket Range Report

Began working on my 75 yard offhand distance today after satisfactory results from 25 and 50. After 5 shots I began having ignition problems. I was wiping between shots with dry paper towel, and apparently I was getting a build up of dried fouling in the drum. I could see it after removing the...

    Hunting from Tree Stands

Just curious. How many of you hunt from tree stands? The kills I remember best are those where I had both feet on the ground and the deer were close -- bowhunting range close. Every deer I ever shot from a tree I felt like it was cheating.

    Lubing REAL bullets

Is there a good way to lube REAL bullets? I just bought a mold and some Oxyoke bullet lube, and the stuff is really too stiff to put on with your fingers. Just wondered if anybody had a way to apply the stuff consistently.

    Rifled Musket Range Report

Another try at the range today with .570 rb and Lee minies. My first four shots offhand at 50 yards with round ball were 4 inches high, but the group was about two inches, with one flyer that went high. Then I tried the cast minies and they were everywhere. I weighed them and inspected. All...

    Range Report

Two 50 yard bench targets from my .58 rifled musket with .570 swaged round ball. Target on the left was shot using the peep hole drilled through the bottom of the 300 yard leaf. Right target was with the hundred yard issue sight. Still shooting about 4 inches high at 50, so my front sight still...
