Pretty good movie on TCM today. Big Sky with Kirk Douglas. Lots of original flintlocks, and generally well done. Hope they run it again soon.

Arthur Hunnicutt is awesome in that movie. I have it on DVD and watch it every now and then. The book is pretty good too.

Arthur Hunnicutt was always one of my favorite character actors. His character in that film was one of the high points of that film. I particularly loved the scene where he's trying to thread that needle to sew up his nephew's wound, and the long windy he tells about sewing the man's ear on backwards, causing him to step the wrong way every time to avoid a rattlesnake.

Saw that movie several years ago and enjoyed it. Finished reading the book last year after having it for about 5 years. Then The Big Sky was on TV the other night and just had a blast going down memory lane again. Great movie. One that got me into BP about 25 years ago along with the Jerimiah Johnson one.

For what it's worth, the movie was filmed on location in Montana. The replica keelboat was left at Fort Benton, MT, where it is still on display along the old steamboat levee.

I credit the book, "The Big Sky", along with Mitchner's "Centennial" with introducing me to this life-long obsession with the fur trade. I read both books in 7th grade.

Rod thanks for that info I have been to fort Benton many times An seen this boat and the museum when I lived in denton but I never put two an two together that this was the same boat as in the movie

Actually, most of the big sky was filmed in and around Grand Teton National Park.

Where did you get the big sky on dvd? I have been looking for it on dvd for years. have the tape but would prefer dvd.
