What kind of oil should I use to lube the action of a BP Revolver?

Foster from Flint

When I ran out of my last can of vintage 'nam era GI gun oil (that my brother brought home from the Army)I started using olive oil for my guns. Got the advice here on the forum. Seems to work just fine and you can use it on your salads too!

i use TC's super lube with ptfe, or gun slick, like wd 40. the are other lube's out their as well.

Gunslick has served me for about 40 years and it works everywhere on the gun, inside and out. I also use it to seat the nipples and have never had one that couldn't later be removed quite easily.

I use the same can of Barricade that I use in the bore. The only place I don't use it is on the arbor. For that I use Crisco, but don't leave it on there if you won't be shooting for a while. It will dry out and leave a mess. I broke a hand spring a few months ago because the Crisco I had lubed the arbor with dried out and made it hard to turn the cylinder. The first time I cocked the gun the hand spring broke.

My son and I use Kleenbore. Nipples, arbor, barrel, chambers, everything inside & out. Pretty good temperature range from cold to hot without problems. Not too much crud build-up either. Comes in several size bottles, and the small one fits right into my fishing tackle sized cleaning kit.

For rust inhibitor we use Birchwood-Casey Barricade (formerly Sheath) in the liquid non-pressurized can when we clean our rifles. The rifle nipples get the Kleenbore as well.

I've never had any problem with Crisco. I always clean my revolvers asap after shooting.

for the pin and nipples I use T/C 'maxi lube' which seems to do better than the lard or crisco I previously used.
I bought some tubes of the 'maxi' years ago when a local gun shop went belly-up and tried it for patch lube did ok but I use something else now does better IMO. glad it does fine with revolvers.

I've also heard bad things about Crisco. And I'm pretty sure advice against using olive oil was in one of Fadala's books. I don't remember his argument but I do know that he recommended it only for salads, not BP weapons.

:bull: Olive oil has been used with muzzleloading weapons since they were invented and it's still used today with excellent results. When reading American history, look for the term "sweet oil" (olive oil).

Gotta agree. Been using it forever with no problems.

The original question quoted above seems addressed to oiling the action. Crisco works fine as a seal/lube over the balls but I will stick to a good gun oil for keeping the action working freely & for preservation/storage.
