I can't say anything on carrying a hawk I will say something on sharp! I worked for my Uncle during the 1950's-60's loging with mules. The three men that cleared would not use an ax if it had a shaving edge on it. The edge would be to thin and role. They wanted a wedge type edge that would stay through more than a limb or two. They all used files to keep the wedge.

This is how I carry some of mine on the back of a bag .
This one ( the bag and hawk) are almost finished and will be for sale in the classifieds here on the forum probably in a few days.
This way of carrying works quite well and gives quick access to your hawk but also keeps it secure and the edge covered.
