How was a single shot pistol traditionally carried? I want to make a holster that makes sense. Thanks in advance for any reply

Not sure how authentic they are buy if you simply google "Kentucky pistol holster you'll see a lot of ideas from shorty holsters to full coverage models. good luck.

I already did that first and I didn't like any of them. I do have an idea though

I should think a flapped holster would be mandatory for weather protection and preventing brush snagging the hammer. YMMV
I am thinking of a simple sling thing for it like the ones you see when you Google it but then it would have a cow's knee type thing covering it and it would be hanging in the sling under that worn under the shoulder around the neck like a Powder Horn

Look up Bear Pistol in the threads. A picture shows a long barreled bear pistol with a holster for it.

I carried A flint pistol when hunting. it’s kind of a pain in the neck And I never needed it. Also. I think it’s pretty dangerous. I stopped carrying it. If your gun is flint put a leather stall on the frizzen. If it’s percussion figure out a way to make it safe.
I made my holster with a large flap to cover the lock and keep the weather off of it. Look at some pictures to get ideas and make your own.

I made this shoulder holster for my pistol, works good, can put it over your coat or not! Lays on my left side.

I made my "holster" from two pieces of latigo leather about 2 1/2" wide; looped and sewed the ends of each in two loops, one for the belt, one for the pistol. Cap or flint made not difference. Used it for reenacting and hunting. Very simple to make and better than the belt hook

I think they were simply tucked into the waist band or belt. Most did not have pistols back then, mainly long guns. I do understand the fur traders may have liked pistols for back up defense.

I have one i built and ,the stick in my belt thing dont work not moving through the woods,so since i make a lot of old style wild west holsters,,I used the also desing,,mostly it wraped down to where both sides are sewen, the made a leather piece that you can just go over the belt and buckel it tight,,Pistol fits deep,,frizzen almost coverd ,dont see any danger of carrting this is the left side cross for me,,works great, and keeps it snug and easy to use, wich mine is a .50 smooth 8 inch barrel a eary duling style and deadly on close game and two grose that was a surprise,,,I use a load of number eight shot and thiry five gains of black,,,surly fun to use,,
