I was given a muzzle loading percussion rifle several years ago for some work I did for a friend. I have almost no experience with guns like this, and have never fired it. Bluing and stock finish are in good condition, with a few scuffs here and there. Bore looks nearly new. The barrel is 28" long, and is marked "THOMPSON/CENTER ARMS, ROCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, CAL 50"

Would this be correctly called a "Hawken" type rifle? A plains rifle?

I would like to sell this rifle, but I have no idea what it is worth, and I would greatly appreciate some insight.

You have a Thompson Center (T/C) Hawken rifle.

Early T/C's didn't have the model name inscribed into the barrel near the caliber designation like the later ones do - so, if the barrel's not marked, it's an early one, slightly more desirable than a newer version.

As a general rule, most gunshops won't take one because their demand lies with young shooters who prefer a modern non-traditional design.

However, if offered in our classifieds, it would likely sell in a New York Minute if properly/fairly priced.

Look through out 'Firearms For Sale classified section for other T/C Hawken rifles in like condition that have sold recently, to determine a fair price.

It is a TC Hawken rifle. Purists argue that it’s not a real Hawken but that’s what the factory named them so that’s what l call them too. Typically sell in the 3 to 4 hundred dollar price range with really nice ones sometimes going for more and grungy ones or ones with rusted out bores going for less. If you could post more pix and include pix of the bore it would help.

What Bubba said about price is what they generally go for here in the classifieds. I can't read the serial number yours but it doesn't appear to have a K prefix indicating it was a kit gun so it is factory built. Those generally bring a little more than a kit gun. I suspect it is worth around $400 if it works fine, no rust and the bore is not pitted.
