I’m thinking of taking my 70’s/80’s vintage Thompson Center 45 cal Hawken to a local gun show tomorrow.
I’d prefer to trade for a military surplus rifle but really have no idea what the TC might be worth.
Any help would be appreciated.
It’s in excellent shape.
Thanks in advance

In my limited experience, a gun show is a better place to BUY a muzzleloader than to SELL one. Unless it's one specifically for blackpowder/antique arms. And I think that value estimate is a little higher than what you're likely to get/be offered.
You’re right about that. The offer at a big gun show will be about half of the $450-500 number.

I know you’re right about the gun show. I rarely see muzzleloaders.
That’s why I’d hoped to trade it.
But it helps to have an idea of what it’d be worth and it’s greatly appreciated.

The trade for an old surplus bolt action was what I’d been hoping for but selling it might be easier.

Well, you can go to the gun show and shop for what you’re looking for, if you find it ask them if they’re interested in a trade. If they say no or low ball you just sell it here.

What TDM said. That is a very nice T/C, I've got a .45 that I've had since 1974, at age 17, wouldn't get rid of it for nothing. It's been all over the hills of Alabama, then I took it with me from coast to coast. Milsurp rifles prices are through the roof the days, if you take it to a show, make sure you stick to your guns price wise, because most of the milsurp guys are only interested in milsurps.

I was 16 in 74. I agree. Milsurp prices are pretty ugly these days but there are a few bargains still out there.
And I’m pretty good at walking away.
I appreciate the advice.

I really do like that stock, mine is still that medium blonde color walnut. I tell you one thing, if you don't have another, one day you'll regret getting rid of it. I would almost be tempted to buy it for the stock, I would put the early mint .50 caliber barrel I have on it. That T/C is just nice, that's all I have to say.

I do have a couple other 50 cal muzzleloaders. This was my step dads. He got it for deer hunting but I don’t ever really remember him taking it. It’s been in a closet for 40 years. I’m not a hunter but I love to shoot.
I bought an old Swiss K31 last year and love it. Now I’d like the 1911 version to go with it.

Gun shows, at least around here, consist of overpriced guns & accessories where the sellers mostly just trade amongst themselves and carry merchandise from show to show. With this in mind, if you find something you like, there is likely a seller that wants what you have. I did a 3 way trade at a gun show last year and ended up with what I wanted and so di two others. Food for thought.

They’re the same here. Most stuff is ridiculously expensive.
Every once in awhile though…

All advice is appreciated.
