I use Bore Butter.

"Grease" isn't necessary, however; some people use olive oil, some use Ballistol...just so long as it isn't petroleum distillate based, like gun oil.

lard (no salt in) or boot grease does good also. I have used T/C natural lube - the tube stuff it does little better maybe it seems. never bought any bore butter but hear it's good.

I use a snythetic lube from Masters. Works really great. Got it from my Brother who uses it on the slides of his semi-autos he uses in competition. Comes in a small bottle with a needle on the end for hard to reach/tight spaces and it's great cause you can squeeze only a drop at a time.

Snake Oil from Dillon works good too! Same type of applicator, and it's rated as an edible grease for food processing equipment.

Why is it not a good idea to use gun oil?

Gun oil is petroleum based. Petroleum based lubricants react with (real) black powder combustion by-products to form a dense black substance resembling tar which is difficult to remove.
