In reading several threads lately I have noticed mention of”removed rust but thinned bluing”. There is a product called Big 45 Frontier Cleaner that I have used on barrels and it does a fantastic job. It’s a metal pad made from turned shavings so there are two scraping edges instead of the round side of steel wool. Used in the same fashion with oil it doesn't remove bluing like steel wool. I guess if you worked it a long while it may but the pad really removes rust fast. I first used it on a pawnshop purchase of an unmentionable 22/20ga Stevens and once the barrel was cleaned with this system I found out I was the proud owner of a beautiful 22mag/ 20ga. I know all of us will never let our smoke poles get all cruddy and rusty but this is great medicine for those acquired finds and hand me downs! Hope this help !
