I use Cratex mandrel and rubberized abrasive bullet points as suggested by Artificer depending on the roughness of the pan casting. I would rather have the pan smooth than rough to help make it easy to keep clean. Your milage may vary. ;)

I've never found it hard to clean a rough surfaced pan.
 
I have hunted the Valley and agree that the weather conditions there are challenging. If as cast unpolished pans work for you, great. I’ve just found that a polished pan helps.

Wonder if back in the day if they could use high speed internet or if they were limited to dialup to communicate?
Maybe snail mail with the USPS.......... ?
