I have an older Uberti Hawken with a rough bore. It is not rusted, I believe it was badly cut to begin with. Halfway down there is an area that feels like a cheese grader when you load, and needless to say shreds patches horribly. I have tried scotchbrite pads, steel wool, while better it is still not acceptable. I was wondering what the options would be and approximate cost. I would think rebarreling would be problematic, fitting a barrel to the metric threaded hooked breach. Maybe I could have the barrel freshened or relined, but if the cost would be more than just getting a Lyman Great Plains, it just would not be worth it. I actually have plenty of good shooters, but having this one around taking up space just bugs me. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks.

Trot,
If it's a manufacturing defect, I would get in touch with Uberti. I had a friend who had the same problem with a Pedersoli side by side rifle. It took some doing but Pedersoli finally replaced the barrels with new ones. It that doesn't work you could always replace it with a green mountain barrel or bore it out to a smoothbore.

VTI has barrels in .54, and .50 for the Uberti Hawken also called Santa Fe by Western Arms

They are not cheap however 230.00 :shocked2:

I have two of those rifles, and If I ever had fix a barrel, I would be boring it up to .54! They are actually closer to .53 from the factory.

I think a re-bore will smack you around 120.00. There is a guy in Texas that can do it, but I cannot remember.

Thanks all, some good suggestions. I sure would like to get away from that .53 caliber, I think Hornady quit making the .520's. I hope this winter is winding down, maybe I will set it aside for next winter's project.
