I recently acquired a BP handgun that I was told was a Pietta 1851. After further discussion on the forums, I found out that it is actually an 1861. Looking at the brass frames, I cannot tell the difference. I can see the difference in the barrel assembly. What are the other differences and will the frames interchange between the two?

Frames would probably interchange between the two, assuming they are the same manufacturer and manufactured around the same time. Typically the '61 frame and cylinder is the same as the '51. Some '51 frames are not cut for the shoulder stock and some '61 frames are cut for shoulder stock, just depends on the manufacturer. There will also be a slot in the bottom of the grip frame for the shoulder stock cut frames

Besides the barrel assemblies I do not believe there is a difference. To answer the second question, they might be interchangeable if both are recent manufacture Uberti (CNC?) Someone more knowledgeable can confirm or deny.
