so you have venison for meat and the weather is fairly cool. what can you find or have on you to add to a 'stew' pot?
 
If you have meat, you don't need a stew pot. Put that puppy on a spit and roast it over a low fire, for some of the best eating you could ever want.
 
An onion, garlic, carrots, celery and potatoes comes to mind. Add in some flour for a thickener. Of course salt and pepper.

Another alternative is to cook it in V8 tomato juice or Italian Salad dressing.

Barley, wild rice, dried veggies (onions/carrots/tomato paste), red pepper, parched corn, and portable soup.

In cool weather, you might also have cat-tails, wild onions and dandelions. But much depends on where you are....

Sure don't take up much room to carry some
garlic,celery seed,oragano and red pepper&thyme. With this
you could make soup from dirt or bark!:rotf::surrender:

In western NC,
look for square clearings when your out hunting/trekking there was a homestead there once (nature doenst make squares generally) and you can find all sorts of stuff where the garden or orchards used to be.

More generic I am fond of cattail root, red sumac berries, wild chives-onion-garlic or leeks, apples, persimmons (if after the first frost), wild ginger and basil are also common here in the Carolinas. Fruit may sound odd but they go mighty fine with some venison. Left over coffee makes a good base (not the grounds) brown up the meat with a little fat, put everything else in and give a quick stir, then add the coffee and enough water to cover everything. Cook slow all day while your hunting, a buried dutch oven works well or a round bottom trade kettle on a low fire or bed of coals. Split a fresh piece of wood for a lid if you want one.
