You state that this is a "Very big French boxlock o/u pistol" but haven't given us any actual measurements yet other than the bore size. Could you provide us with some so that we could really appreciate it's size?

That thing certainly qualifies as a "stand and deliver" hand cannon. Would tend to agree with Artificer, think it's probably a coachman's or naval piece. Doesn't appear to have the strength of construction to have been intended for Howdah use...but I"ve been wrong many times before! :wink: For personal defense, it would go a long way toward "lighting them up"!! :haha:

In the third picture you can see the pistol next to a ruler (scaled in centimeters). So the barrels are about 9 in. long. The whole pistol measures about 14 in.
