A couple weeks ago I shot the rifle after doing every thing I could to make sure I had got rid of any/all lead deposits in barrel. Patches still shreaded with prb. 250gr reels ave. about 4in @ 25yds. off bags!!
I gave up on the t/c barrel went home and took a greenmountain barrel that I knew to be past its prime off a Navy Arms hawken( this was a t/c hawken drop-in that I had modified to fit the Navy Arms). I moved the barrel weage slot back to the t/c hawken position, cleaned the barrel good and put it on the t/c. Took it to the farm yesterday and tried prb 70gr 777 over powder wad 490rb the patches I found were shreded to various degrees and groups very poor. Next same 70gr with pa conicals and opw poor group. Next 250gr reels 70gr opw, THAR SHE BE!!!! one ragged hole.
I then sighted in for dead center in preperation for a group @ 100yds unfortunatly ran out of daylight and didn't try the 100yd.
Now why would the 250reel shoot so well in a 1:70 twist? My guess is because of the 250gr not being much longer then the rb. The barrel was used in match shooting bout 25years ago with prb and was a tack driver. It was then used for hunting for another 20 or so years till the prb groups started to deteriate, I assume due to worn rifleing.Thats when I bought the t/c bout 6yrs ago.
I wanted to try bp yesterday but ran out of time, also will be getting some thicker patches for another try with prb.Hope to get another nice day soon to shoot some more.
