Traditions is usually made by pietta these days.
There will be a two letter code on the barrel
that determines the year.
CM is 2014
25 to 35 gr is normal load. 35 to 40 is pretty much maximum powder it will hold and still seat the ball fully.
To get started.
#10 or 11 caps, whichever you can find.
3f or equivalent powder
Dry or prelubed wads.
.451 or .454 balls.
pour the powder in, place the wad, then seat the ball.
Then cap and fire.

If it was made by Pietta, and in the last ten years or so, start with Remington #10 percussion caps.

a .38 spcl case is a good target load of 3F if you don't have a powder measure. the .357 case holds more of course and a 7.62X39 case holds about the max charge that can be loaded in the .44.
Here's a Forum link to a table that gives a pretty close powder weight that one can expect to get when using a modern cartridge for a powder measure.

More than a few people have soldered a wire to the side of the cartridge case to serve as a handle.
It also reminds them that this empty cartridge case is their trusty powder measure.
Not that anyone would glance at a spent cartridge case in their box of muzzleloading stuff and pitch it away before asking themselves, "Now, why did I put that in there?" :rotf:

my kit for my revolvers has the .357 and X39 cases included. the X39 is the hunting or heavy charge under the Lee mold conical.
in my kit for my .50 capper rifle are cut down 30-30 and '06 cases. never loaded a 45-70 casefull of 3F I'd say that's a stout load for a .50.
