I just aquired a .54/ 430gr TC Maxi Ball mould that came with several other black powder items (I mentioned this in my Maxi-Shok thread) and cast up some from pure lead. Now I've never fired a Maxi ball or Plains bullet from any of my muzzleloaders, just Lee REAL's and round ball so I dont know how they will shoot. And seeing what the Lyman and discontinued TC moulds sell for I was pretty excited to cast these up. So after I casted 2 doz of these I went to work with how to lube these up. I used a tin, fill with a mixture of TC Bore butter amd Lee Liquid Alox (75:25). Placed the Maxi balls in the tin, poured the heated mixture over to fill to the top lube band and let cool. I then used the conical holder portion of a TC quick load and slid it over the maxi ball to extract it out of the hardened lube and used to conical seater from the quick load to push it out and voila!!

I shoot the 370 gr. .50cal maxiball out of my TC Renegade 90gr. of FF Goex powder.A deadly and extremely accurate combo.

I'll be range testing these tomorrow with a variety of charges from my New Englander and Hawken. Goex ffg will be the powder i'm using.......I can't wait.

I'm impressed with the clean results from your casting an lubing. I've had great accuracy with Maxi's that were neither so well cast nor well lubed, so I have high hopes for your results.

If you've got em, be sure to take along some lubed felt wads when you go to the range. More often than not, they've added the little extra measure of accuracy I expect from conincals.

And yeah, hold tight for some serious shoulder thumping! :grin:

Well it was'nt too bad on the shoulder. It might had something to do with the 4 layers of clothing I was wearing lol. It was raining on & off during the shoot so I may have hurried the shots. But anyways, I started with 80grs of Goex FFG which brought me on paper but I was'nt satisfied with the groups (+4") but like I said I hurried the shots. Then with my last 3 Maxi's I increased the charge to 100grs volume and was satisfied with the results. I'll take your advice "Brown Bear" and use some felt wads next time. So here is my final grouping from today, 100 yards, 100grs Goex FFG & 430gr Maxi-Ball;

pretty good,I had the best accuracy out of 90gr pyrodex RS or Select before I switched to BP and PRB. Like BB said try a wad over the powder that always helped my conical loads.I use this method with my PRB loads too.I'm sold that it helps for lots of reasons.Shrink the groups then adjust sights to center them :hatsoff:
