Suggestions to make assembly of patch box simpler

Just finished making a simple patch box. For me, it was a challenge to solder the three hinge pivots and spring pad. My challenge was keeping everything lined up before, and during soldering. I have to believe the pros here have made them with less effort than I. Thought about soldering all the steel on first and then cutting the brass I_I shape, but that would leave too large of a gap between the lid and escutcheon. If I solder all steel at the same time, solder ( for me) will adhere to the brass at the points of movement. So, I ended up doing it in steps, and having to set small pieces of metal on the parts for the clamp to work. Another thought I had, but still did not like:
solder the steel on the back and cut the hinge knuckles afterward. Same issue with respect to flowing solder getting into the moving brass parts. My way worked, I am just curious for better methods. My brass is .125 and I do not want to make it with thicker material.
Thoughts would be appreciated.
The pivot pin is not trimmed for length yet.
