The old way and way folks like Hershel House do it, is make the cuts with a hacksaw straight down, clean this area out with the hacksaw then clean up with a file, Then lift both ends with a cold chisel to form the dovetails.
I made my chisel off centered, so I can lift the ends easy. Most old dovetails didn't remove material from the area at both ends, they just raised it up. This makes a stronger dovetail.
