I fired a couple rounds from my .36 Pietta 1858 into clay and pulled the balls. Thought I'd post the pics here.

You can see there is substantial expansion. The slightly flatter ball was fired with 25gr of powder, the other with 20gr.

If I can find my calipers I'll measure them.

This is why Confederate Cavalrymen talked about how they loved their .36 Navies and round ball was much better than conicals, when they talked to Elmer Keith and Skeeter Skelton about using them in combat

That ball hit, flattened out and probably did all kinds of nasty tumbling inside the torso or wherever it hit

I'm interested to see what they measure at
 
Not bad - we've got expansion to .447" and .432".
