I dug out an old powder horn that I got when I was probably around 10 years old (so it is probably around 45+ years old). I don’t recall exactly, but it probably came from Fort Harrod or Fort Boonesborough in Kentucky, or maybe from Squire Boone Caverns in Indiana. Anyway, I had it, along with my cork roundball and roll cap Kentucky rifle and pistol, when I was a kid. It wasn’t poorly made, so I thought maybe I could turn it into a useable powder horn.

I added a knob for the leather thong to the bottom (instead of it being held under one of the tacks holding the end on, as it was originally), and filed a channel around the neck to fasten the other end of the thong (instead of it just being attached to the stopper).

I don’t think it turned out too badly, and would probably be considered a “day” horn. It holds a little bit more powder than my large brass container. I may try to do some carving on it, but not sure yet.

If the horn holds as much as the brass flask, that’s a good start. One of my brothers gave me a flask like that several years ago. It is my favorite.

Your horn looks like a good “quarantine” project.

Thanks, DoubleDeuce 1! I will keep toying with this, I am sure. I use my brass flask a lot (along with an adjustable measure). I also have the smaller (pistol?) size one. They are accurate, quick, and easy to use.

LOL!😁 I still have the rifle, a little worse for wear, but heck, it is probably 50 years old (I think the pistol is long gone). I may have to post a pic of it.
As promised, here are a couple of pics of the cork round ball cap rifle from circa the early 1970s. Enjoy!
