Sounds to me like you've got bad caps. If they were good they'd pop. Now if they're popping but the gun isn't firing then that's another matter such as a clogged nipple or flash channel etc.

You did pour powder down the barrel first? Dont laugh people dry ball muzzle loaders all the time.

Ok so I misread your post at first. Lack of cap ignition can def be bad caps. Also it can be the angle of the hammer being misaligned n not getting a clean strike. Fixed by heating n bending. Good luck

Make sure the hammer is striking the cap perfectly square on top and not just on the edge of the cap. If so, as stated above it will require heating and bending the hammer so it strikes properly.
Lots of folks will be upset with this comment, but Traditions guns do not have great quality control. If you get a good one, then they are good, however otherwise it will take some tweaking to get things right and afterwards you should be fine.

Walkingeagle is right. I've had one four about four years and when it came I notice the hammer doesn't line up perfectly. However, from the start I've been using real blackpowder and Wichester magnum caps and very rarely a misfire. If I use standard caps and real BP,I have an occasional misfire. If I use magnum caps and Pyrodex,an occasional misfire. If I try to use standard caps and Pyodex there's no use to shoot. About seventyfive percent misfires.

Do the caps not go off at all, even after dropping the hammer on them a couple of times? If the go off after a couple tries you may a problem with cap fitting properly on the nipple.

If the caps don’t go off at all, check that the disk that holds the explosive charge didn’t fall out of the. Had some Remington caps not that long ago and noticed some little green disks in the tin. You could tap the caps on a hard surface and the charge would come out. Only had this issue with one tin, but suspected entire lot could be questionable. Emailed Remington, but never heard back.

Make sure the fired cap from the last shot isn't stuck in the hammer face. I've experienced that more than once, myself. It will help to polish and open up the recess in the hammer nose with a dremel tool. Are the caps hard to push on? Make sure the nipple isn't mushroomed from dry firing; this keeps the cap from seating fully.

Is the lock tightened enough or overly tightened? Before, my lock had been just a little to loose and so it makes it so the hammer can't strike straight on.

Hanshi brought up a couple good points. Check to make sure the fired cap isn't stuck, and make sure the nipple is OK and not seriously beat up.

When you tighten the screw that holds the lock in place, make sure you dont overtighten. If the screw ocomes through it could interfere with the hammer fall making a light strike, IE cap does not go off. With a little frustration, anything can be fixed on that rifle. It is a good rifle, i really enjoy mine. Go slow, you will get there.
