Legion XXIV poses with soldiers representing the Legion of the United States, which was commanded by Major General "Mad" Anthony Wayne from 1792 into 1796. The occasion was a "Time Line" Event at Fort Meigs, Perrysburg, Ohio, June 14-15, 2003. Fort Meigs is the largest reconstructed "War of 1812" era fort in the United States. The small artillery piece may look like an "excuse" for a cannon; but it was actually a devastating anti-personnel weapon. These so-called "King" Howitzers, named for the maker, Daniel King in Germantown (Philadelphia) PA, had a 17 inch barrel and a 2.75 inch bore and could fire cannister rounds, like a large shot gun. The rounds could be solid shot or exploding "grenade" shells timed by fuses to burst above the ground. General Wayne had 16 of these nasty weapons, which when fired together in a salvo could lay-down a withering curtain of lead with a wide killing radius.
