Find a small glass jar with a metal lid .Punch a small hole in the lid and thread a length of Lampwick thru'. Put a small quantity of Lamp oil mixed with about 30% diesel in the jar,put the lid on and trim the wick to about 1/8" and "wallah".You have a blacking lamp as used by Gunsmiths and Stockers. Thickness of soot can be varied by how close you hold the item (Metal to be inserted)to be blacked..Jam or Mustard sample jars are Ideal..
