I made a derringer kit last year. When I took it to a shoot and tried to hit paper with it I couldn't even get it on the target frame.

This Sunday I tried again, sneeking up closer and closer until I finally found a hole on paper, but all I could manage was a wide shotgun pattern at about 15 feet.

Shooting at more distant target was at least more fun as I could see where it was hitting on the range berm, but an occasional shot went off into space with no indication of where its imapct was.

I was surprised that the .50 rifled bore wouldn't reliably hit a barn door further away than 20 feet. I wonder if I just need to find a better patch/ball combination or just be happy that it goes bang.

Still fun to shoot.

That type of pistol was made to be up close and personal. Card table range!
Same as my 1848 .31 Wells Fargo. Try as i might, after hundreds of rounds. If its past 10 yards it isn’t hitting squat. And thats long range.
Best to run up to a card cheater, hit his head twice with the barrel, then shoot him point blank in face.
And probably still miss.
