    warped stock.............

Bob, I wouldn't worry about it affecting accuracy. That D wt., (1 and 1/8 inch breech), is pretty sturdy in even a .54. (I have one also). A little heavy tho, but a dam good shooter. If you thin the fore end down to 1/16 or so sidewalls, as in most originals you will not have any problem...

    Barrel engraving question

Bill, I would date it somewhere. Makes it a lot easier for the kids to sell it at a garage sale after we croak.. I usually do my name and semi-date on top flat, as in '05 ( might have been 1805?) Let'em guess. Regards, Terry

    Drum

Zonie, Does this apply to a flint vent liner also? Wondering, Terry

    Thoughts on barrel coning

Stumpkiller, I beg to differ, at least with Joe's tool, on both square and round bottom deep groove rifling. (.010-.012). The coned barrels I have done exhibit a definite,(looking INTO the muzzle with naked eye), TAPER of the lands, wider at muzzle to narrower toward breech, and, conversly, a...

    pc front sites

C, How about copper?, Got an old Leman type rifle here.(perc.ca.1860's?) that is copper blade on iron, exactly .065 in height. Yes, I know he said pre 1790, I was just wondering how early copper sights might have been seen. Regards, Terry

    Symmetry

Bill, Way to go!! You are on the right track. I generally do one side of one specific area and then the other. Working from a blank gives you the advantage of fitting it to you prefectly, instead of the "average" fit of a precarve,( although some precarves can be modified, if left large...

    Brass vent liners are junk!

    #3 wire gauge, (.213), is correct for 1/4 X 28. Regards, Terry

    Gunstock wood type question

Static, There is a very good article in the Jan-Feb 2004 issue of Muzzleloader Magazine called "Historic Gunstock Woods" by Steven A. Shepherd, who, the article says, is a "furniture conservator" and firearms restorer. I don't know if the article is available thru the web, but he states that...

    Old hooks

Anyone can plainly see that Stumpy's kinfolk simply took their hat off as camouflage and started the big dollar hook making business. I bet he still has stock! :sorry: Terry

    How did we get here?

Fantastic Stumpkiller!! This also proves, thet not "only" is Stumpy "quick witted" , but he's also "fleet of foot" ,..... 'cause he found this site, a "day" before I did!! :applause: :master: :: YMHS rollingb Rollingb, That's only cuz he can see a little better than you...

    Art or craft?

Blahman, How about "ARTISAN", a combination of craft and art. Hands and heart and brain. A muzzleloader built of pipe and a pine 2x8 that fits the shooter, that will shoot well, is a delight, and will do it's job. Another gun, expertly engraved, inlaid with two pounds of gold, pearl, and...

    Measuring Stock Drop?

Eric, You can build a "try stock" to determine your exact pull and drop. You only need a piece of 1x6 pine and an evening, and it will last forever, so that when you get to building rifles for your friends, they will be truly "custom". Put some sights on it. Set it so that when you throw it up...

    Gemmer/Gimmer locks?

As Rich said, Gemmer was an early maker, and according to a book I once had, took over the Hawken shop and continued making Plains style guns into 1900 or so. Don't know about repro's of them. Regards, Terry

    tapered barrel

Riley Smith at Longhammock will make a tapered barrel also. Last number I had was 352-748-7373 or 3909. Regards, Terry

    United States Postal Service S**ks

When the nosy lady at the PO asked what's in the box, I told her that it was a wood carving. She was happy as a hog bathin' in slop. I understand that it is NOT necessary to label a muzzleloader on the outside of the box anyway. Regards, Terry
