I have a kentucky 45 cal CVA rifle and was wonderin what your favorite powder, patch, and amount of powder you like.I know there are alot of variables, but it's been so long since i shot the dern thing i forgot what the heck i used.Going up to the hills soon and want to shoot again,i'm sorta banged up with a rottin hip and back so i don't get out as much as i would like.2ff 3ff?

Chief are talking about hunting or target loads? Do you happen to know what twist is your Kentucky? If its a 1:48 I would use 50 grains of 3f and a patched rounball for a target load. Hope this helps!

Cheif I would use 3fff anywhere from 40 to 80 grains just depending on how far and how serious shootin you wanna do. If you just wanna plink pop cans at 25 yards 40 grains will be a nice mild load and will kill them pop cans dead every time! As for patch thickness, That depends on the size of ball. Are you using 445,s or 440,s ? Either way just take som various sizes , old shirts will do as long as they are 100% cotton!!!!!! Have fun!As ageneral rule i find pillow tick to be pretty versitle as far as size. It works for all my guns. Again if your just doin casual shooting you dont gotta get too scientific, At least that is my humble opinion.

For target loads: 40 grain FFF,.440 ball, .015 patch, lubed with 80% lard 20%beeswax. For deer up powder to 60 grain. :hmm:

Let's see I just built one for a gal, and the load I found was,
60grns of Pyrodex P under a spit patch .018 pillow ticking and a .440 ball with a spit patch swab after each shot.
She didn't like that because it was hard to load and changed to,
45grns of Pyrodex P and an Oxyoke .015 prelubed and .440 ball with a dry patch swab after the load on each shot,

The ways are many,, :idunno:

My old whip crack load for the old .45 Kentucky was a .44 ball and 65 grains of FFFg. Don't remember the patch. It plucked the head off of many dinners.

Now I'm shooting one with .453 ball and 40-45 grains of Jacks Battle Powder.

Thanks 1:48 and just target shootin, looks like i got some good refresher loads, thanks awhole lotta bunch~ :) I'm savin the info :hatsoff:
