The finishes on my few run the gamut in patterns and colors. Here's a photo of the ones I owned a few years back. In general I prefer the darker tones.

Someone has probably mentioned this already, but, each piece of wood is different. NO ONE can really guarantee a certain color on any piece of maple.
You can give some guidance as to color tones and darkness of the stain, but not duplicate colors.
