On an Iron mounted SMR should the Trigger guard and butt plate be Polished then Browned? or just sanded with 320 sandpaper and finished??

Even in the late flint period sandpaper doesn't seem to have been used. It wasn't readily available, and it was all pretty rough. Stocks were scraped and burnished (which I think is still the best way to finish a longrifle). Metal was filed; and yes, there are originals that still show file marks on the inside of the trigger bow. If a finer finish on the metal was wanted, stones were used to bring it to the desired level of finish.
