Will shortly acquire a Hawken 58 cal. with a Sharon barrel. Do not know of the Sharon barrels back-story. Any info appreciated. Still in business? Reputation? So forth

Excellent reputation for making quality muzzleloader barrels. Were premier barrel makers back in the day. Don't know if they're still in business or not.

I had a .54 Sharon barrel in a Hawken I built around 1978-79? Excellent quality and known for their accuracy. I think they either sold out, merged or went under sometime in the 80’s?

Lots of info out there

If you visit the GRRW Collectors website and go to the “Heyday of the Hawken” page, you’ll find some information on Sharon. Sorry, but I don’t know how to post s link with the device I’m using.

ADDENDUM: Link to the GRRW Collector website: Heyday of the Hawken

Sharon started making barrels in 1974 and Hawken kits in 1976. Everyone has their own opinions, but the general consensus was that their barrels and rifle kits were excellent. If I remember correctly, they made eight-grooved rifle barrels with a very slow twist, maybe 1:70”. They folded in the late seventies or early eighties due to financial issues.

From here, I need to work from memory, which in my case is faulty with alarming regularity. However, maybe this will get the conversation started.

I understood that Sharon’s tooling may have passed through several hands but was eventually acquired by an outfit in Kalispel called Orion Barrels. They have also gone under, and I think Oregon Barrels in Springfield, Oregon, now has the Sharon tooling. You don’t hear of many people using Oregon Barrels, but I’ve never heard any negative comments about them, so they must be pretty good. I think @Herb (a forum member) built a Hawken around one of them and posted about it on this forum a while back. He did some fine shooting with it.

I’m not certain of the information concerning the disposition of Sharon’s equipment, but that’s the way I understand it.

Best regards,

Notchy Bob
