I purchased the 54 caliber kit from DGW and put it together. Pretty easy and came out looking good. I have never owned or shot a flintlock pistol so I have some issues / questions I would like comments on.

It has a vent liner. When I ran the ramrod down the barrel the first time I realized that there is a "chamber" that the vent liner enters into and the ramrod cannot go to or pass by the vent liner. I shot it 5 times and then it started to miss fire. The only way to clean it to shoot more is to remove the vent liner and clean that chamber. Am I missing something, maybe senility or is this how these guns / barrels are?

The sights on the gun are terrible and I want to replace the front and eliminate the rear sight. Is it possible to fill that dovetail and either blue it or sand the whole barrel and brown it so you cannot see the rear dovetail?

Also the flint came from Pedersoli wrapped in lead rather than leather. Is that unique to pistols? I'd prefer to use leather but not sure why it came with lead.

Any advice appreciated.

Had the same issue with the pistol and rifle.

Now I also use a small caliber brush and patch to get down in that smaller area. When I get back to the house, I plug up the vent liner with a toothpick and clean as usual.

Mine also came with lead wraps which I used until I replaced the flints and now just use leather. I guess it's just an Italian preference?

There are more experienced builders here which could help steer you with different sights.

I used the KY rifle in .50 to take a nice deer last fall. Have been pleased with the accuracy.
