I've seen pictures of pattern boards. What are they constructed of? I just use paper myself, but was just wondering about the pattern board I saw. It appears to be covered in some type of cement or plaster? I'm assuming they spread over the previous shot with some type of plaster/cement then shoot again?

A lot of ranges use a thick metal plate and keep a brush and can of heavy paint or grease to brush over the prior pattern
