I have a Pecatonica NW Trade Gun (20 gauge) coming and I need to get the minimum basics to shoot it before I get it built. What is the bottom line equipment that you guys recommend? I know there is a lot of wisdom here and I am sure guys have bought more than what they needed or wished they got something else.

Here's a link, @8541ss, to 2 pages listing equipment needed to get started. Start back at the original post and start noting all the equipment we talk about.

Tell us a bit more about your trade gun, What's the caliber? What do you intend to use it for? Is it flint or percussion? Do you have a local traditional Muzzleloading gun club that you can get some information? How well supplied are your local gun stores? You will need to get familiar with the on-line suppliers of muzzleloading goods.

Thanks. I did a search but was not entering right wording.

The link you got above is a good one. Honestly, shooting these kinds of guns can lend itself to getting lots of stuff.
There are needs and nice to haves. You need to decide how much you want based upon what you're shooting (round ball bare or patched, varied shot loads) and why (range shooting vs hunting).
Dig around in the smoothbore sub-forum and you'll see a lot. Over shot cards, over powder cards, wads, patch material, screw drivercleaning jag, tow worm/patch puller, shot, roundball, spare flint and patch material will get you going (obviously you'll need to add powder). You may want a shooting bag, shot snake, breech scraper, flint wallet, etc, etc.

This doesn't answer your question at all, but take your time with building your gun. These can make a great gun, but there is a lot of work to get it right, a ton of wood to remove and shape. Study a lot of pictures of originals and don't be afraid to ask questions, pay close attention to posts by Rob. M. he is a master at building these!
