In Charles Lanman's book "Letters from the Allegheny Mountains" published 1849 tells of Cherokee blacksmith named Salola (the Squirrel), whose hand-made rifles and pistols were the wonder of his contempories.

This is the earliest reference I have seen for a Native American gunsmith, even though Lanman describes him as a blacksmith.
