I was wondering if anyone out there has ever engraved already browned hardware on a piece. I was thinking about sending a fowler to a jeweler to have the brass hardware engraved as I think they might do a better job than the maker. It got me thinking about having the lock engraved as well. Would I be able to touch up the channels left afterwards, or would the smoothing of the burls after engraving require the entire lock to be completely taken down and re-browned? Any advice would be appreciated.

You'd want to just send the parts to be engraved, not the whole gun, of course. They often put parts into a fancy holder in order to engrave.

I didn’t mean engraving while on it. I’m asking if the whole lock would need to be taken back to in the white after engraving, or if it could just be touched up.

It will not hurt to try. If you don't like the look re-brown the whole part. Depending on how you will apply or draw the pattern on the lock the existing browning may help or hurt.

It will have to be re-browned. Engraving will raise a burr around the incises. Besides, with a browned exterior, those bright shiny cuts will look a bit odd.
