Just got my first revolver. 1860 Army made by Uberti. And boy, a lot of people aren’t kidding, these grips are RED. And slippery. What’s the best way to remove the glossy red without sanding?
Remove the grips, use a stripper to remove the sealant, clean and dry then rub down with some fine sandpaper. Once that is done you can stain it a different color if you choose then use a finishing oil to seal the wood. I use Tung Oil, others use True Oil and others use boiled linseed oil. DO NOT seal with a Urethane as it can yellow with age and if applied too heavy (many multiple coats) your grips will become slick again. Leave polyurathane for household furniture finishing/refinishing and modern gunstocks.Just got my first revolver. 1860 Army made by Uberti.
