Had the pleasure of watching the movie Barry Lyndon tonight. It was made back in the mid 1970s & starred Ryan O'Neil, directed by Stanley Kubrick, & is based on the book 'The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, Esq.' by William M. Thackeray.
It was set in the mid to late 1700s in Ireland, Europe, & England & included quite a bit of firearms useage, including a couple of interesting duels with pistols (plus one with swords), & some military scenes involving the British, Prussian, & French armies during the Seven Years War. It also gives some interesting military tidbits into the British & Prussian armies & the conditions their soldiers served under. Quite a long movie at around three hours, & not real fast paced but I found it entertaining, plus I think it's one your wives/girlfriends/significant others (or all three!) would enjoy watching with you. I borrowed my copy from Netflix if you happen to be a member.

What I liked about it is that Kubrick set up every scene to look like an eighteenth century painting. Visualy it's great. A little slow in parts and the hero is your basic slimeball but a good movie overall.

I would label this one as a serious chick-flick if it weren't for all the fighting. This is something you might expect from the same guy who did Full Metal Jacket.

All in all it's a very well done movie, which did some interesting things by filming only with candlelight in some scenes, which I feel gave the movie a small but notable edge on creating an authentic atmosphere.

I'm not an expert, but to me this is one of the most realistic, most brutal depictions of linear tactics I have seen on film.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they got it spot on!
