Ballistol.............

After much research I finally obtained a can of Ballistol. Never used this product before but many ML folks seem to like it. So my question is, how do you folks use Ballistol when cleaning your muzzleloaders?

I mix it with water - maybe 1 part Ballistol to 4 parts water. Put it in a spray bottle and use it to clean, lube patches, clean your hands! Been using it for many years with good results and the odor grows on you!

It has a unique odor unlike anything else I have run across!

I wear Hoppe’s #9 as cologne… unfortunately, well, for me anyways, it mostly attracts men.
-Red, all DC, no AC…

I, like those above, use it mixed with water for cleaning and full strength for lubing and oiling.

According to the MSDS sheet it smells like licorice, don't now about that but after using it for all these years it smells like "gun stuff" to me, smells pretty good!

I also mix it 4 parts water to 1 part Ballistol for cleaning and patch lube. Been using it for years. Use it undiluted for rust protection after cleaning.

I use water with a bit of dish soap for cleaning. I use a mix of 1 part water soluble oil (could be Ballistol) to 7 parts of pater for patch lube at the range. After cleaning with water and soap, then either rubbing alcohol or WD40 to displace any remaining water, I wipe the bore with a Ballistol soaked patch. I finish with a rust inhibitor that dries to a film such as Barricade or Boeshield.

Yes, as you said, I had a brain seize earlier, I clean my BPCR guns with Ballistol and water and my ML with water and a drop of Dawn dish soap.

Ballistol to oil and lube, if setting aside for long term a mixture of Ballistol and RIG mixed together is my go to.

I always thought it smelled like stinky feet!

I clean with Hoppes BP cleaner and lube with Ballistol. Great results.

Have also used Ballistol to good effect on abused leather. I collect Case knives and wipe them with Ballistol before putting in display cases. I have used it on wood, but prefer Renwax for that.

I wipe mine down with it wood and all. It does work on leather too and I accidentally got some in a deep cut on my finger and I think it healed up faster. Who knew?

I clean with soap and water. I rinse with ballistol and water to prevent flash rust when oven drying the gun and use it full strength as a rust preventative. Also use it on patches. I like the product, but honestly it smells like vomit to me...yuk!

Yes, it is. At a cost. Their website suggests I use it on garden implements. That would be pricey. A large metal tub of coarse sand/fine gravel doused with used motor oil takes care of spades, shovels, forks, hoes and the like.
WD40 followed by 3in1 does the small tools.
Ballistol is great but not inexpensive.

Love the stuff. I use it for cleaning then use a rag and give the gun a wipe down giving a light coat on the metal. I also use it on Garden tools to coat.

All the posts about the smell has me wondering what is wrong with me, I can’t say I have ever noticed. Guess I need to go have a good snort and see.
