All you southwest folks, it is time to gather mesquite beans again. Dried beans soaked in water and layed on the coals and or fire, Puts a flavour to your outdoor cooking like nothing else. Flavours that meat all up. A true PC eating. If any of you have a way to turn dried mesquite bean hulls and seeds both into a fine grounded meal. This was an orginal food for Native Americans and many 1st time pioneers into the southwest region. Use it on any meats to give it a sweet BBQ flavour. Can be made into a bread or paste to like a candy. High in protein, calcium, and fiber. A true PC food. Don't have any recipes, but check the web on all the foods and value from the beans. Good Cookin

I have never tried to do anything with the beans... but love to use the wood for smoking... makes a nice spicy/hot flavor...good stuff...dont live in Tx anymore so no access unless I buy a bag of chips :(

My wife (3Hearts)and I went Mesquite harvesting and loaded up with a towsack full of dried beans. We made fahitas on the grill, you talk about a true smoke spice taste! Wow! These beans raw are good to just chew on too. Sweet to the taste. Let your fire turn to coals, and throw a large handful on the coals. This will make a very strong smoke, even a sweet smell in it too. If you are a jerky maker, these beans are the only why to go. If they catch on fire, instead of smoking, grab a handful and dunk them in water for 1 second, Then throw them on the coals. You can't go wrong.
