I cited this 2015 thread in a response on the shotguns for turkeys thread, but thought I would pull it out in case it is overlooked. Does anyone have any fresh information on when the jug choke was first used? Is the concept really only about 150 years old? That would date it well into the cartridge era, not that the technique has not been used to improve the performance of thousands and thousands of muzzleloading shotguns.

Well that's when it was documented. Could it have been earlier, sure...., but if folks didn't write it down OR more likely if the information was lost as preservation technology wasn't very durable by modern standards..., who can say?
