My soldering skills are limited, but I seem to get by with decent results. Tinning the metal first, is one way, but I just don't do that process. I am working on a 1803 Harpers Ferry flintlock musket. The ferrules are steel and I silver soldered them on to the under rib first. When I soldered on the under rib I used low temp Sil-tin, but had the solder in place before the heat. This was real easy and worked as I had hoped. Photo #1 is a partial shot of the under rib. #2 Is the under rib after grinding slots for solder, placing chunks of solder in the slots and basting the surface liberally with liquid flux. #3 is the end result. As I soldered from right to left the flux was bubbling first and then you could see the solder flow at the joint. Maybe this idea is a good for others and maybe not, but it worked well for me.
