.485 Round Ball Mould

I have a Uberti Hawken in .50 Cal. It's a good shooter but the bore is tight. With a .490 RB the biggest patch I can use is .015. They work but I have a bunch of old T/C patches that go about .018. They won't load with the .490 balls.

I just ordered a .485 mould, I think they will work with the T/C patches. Have any of you tried a .485 ball in a tight bore?

I have a old lyman mold that makes a ball of .486 that I use for my 50cal (green mountain barrel)and I use .010 patches so that I don't need a short starter, and they actually do group very well.

I've been using a .48 ball mold for a year or so, with a .022 ticking patch (wonder lubed) and am pretty happy with the results. I've also started using a .52 mold with the same patching for my .54 Renegade. Both molds came from Jeff Tanner. Hank

Definitely the way to go. I wish LEE made a .520 & a .485 mold.

The mould is "new" old stock that was for sale on ebay. It's a single ball mould made by Lyman.

Though I haven't used it yet, I purchased a .485 RB mould from Rapine bullet moulds, in Penna. It is a 2-cavity aluminum mould.

I too started using a .480" ball as a .490" was too tight in one of my .50 Cal guns. Accuracy seems pretty good but I'd like to try .485" just for the halibut. Ought to be ok I would bet.
