My target rifles are 40. I had a 32 and it was not very accurate, 32 is very fiddley to load consistently. 32 does not carry well at distance. At 50 yards the groups were not good enough. My 36 is very good, loadable and competitive. I like that I can buy bulk 350 balls from Hornaday. I am a 40 cal fan. I am a target shooter mostly. For hunting I'd use one of my 54s. The 40 is a popular target size. It is easy to load. It is also thrifty with lead and powder. I used to shoot 45s for targets. 45 is a little easier to load with precut patches.

I made a very fancy long rifle with a straight barrel. Never again. Swamped barrels are far superior in handling and architecture.
