I once got in trouble for having a 24 inch by 1 inch oak dowel in my front seat as personal protection. Not allowed to have clubs, saps, or pocket rocket slingshots in NY state. It's not a free country anymore.

IME, a fishing pole carried in a vehicle where "other" means are prohibited will repel most pests when it's whipped around a bit after exiting the vehicle......

That's the same thing I was gonna say with the addition that, if you do this be sure to have a ball & glove in the vehicle too.
Yeah and remember to take the price tags off them before you put them in the car.

I have a key chain on my car keys. I consists of a carabiner on a length of paracord which is woven and the end of the paracord is woven around a 1" steel ball. Keeps me from losing my keys!
