How bad did mess up my dovetail?

Welp….took the plunge and said “F’IT” and tried my hand at doing a dovetail. Yeesh. It ain’t purty, but the rear sight is on my Hawken. Any “constructive” criticism would be appreciated.

Well ya sure got it deep enough. Believe I'd'a tried for about 1/3 of that depth and a smoother/flatter bottom.

Layout fluid is your friend.

I believe I'd be making a filler and insert new shorter sight.

Maybe oversized picture makes it look worse than it is.

Hopefully you didn't go so deep as to compromise the barrel.

So I could still see the drill dimples from the drill holes I was trying to cover up from the get go.

Where did you find that? I had tried finding a dovetail jig and could not locate one in stock anywhere. Really wish I would have had that.

Move it as needed to obtain the desired length. But...you are already too deep for this to help.

That's the way I cut the dovetails on my builds.

Before you fire that thing, please do some measurements for what remains between your sight and bore.
Looks a lot like an accident looking for a place to happen.

This was a Traditions kit and came with plastic sights with the rear sight being mounted using two drilled and tapped holes in the barrel.

I'd get a new barrel, you are deep! If you have dimples below that, I would be worried about safe barrel thickness. Next time use hacksaw and safe-side triangle file.

whats sad, is I did use a hacksaw and triangle file. :-(
