Price Check: TC Hawken 50 cal

I am thinking about buying this "Flintlock" locally. It had 4 digit serial number with Sharon barrel. Has some usual wear from hunting. Seller is asking $400 for it, is it a good deal??? Thank you

There is such a broad price range for these guns it is hard to tell; a unfired one may go for over $400, most of the older ones go for around $300 if the barrel is clear and unpitted. Most of the ones I see in the classified go for about $250.

I sold a completely as new restoration of a Renegade with a new unfired TC barrel, an L&R lock upgrade, a completely reworked and detailed stock for $400, this was about $25 less than I had in parts after I gathered some random parts of ebay.

Reading here, some of the early T/C flintlock locks had poor geometry and the lock had to be replaced since they did not spark well. If the lock has not been replaced that would influence the price on the rifle for me.

Wonder what the cost of a L&R lock upgrade is?

Paid $450.00 for an unused T/C Hawken last year.
It was never used. I f this helps. The standard price for an L&R lock is about $185.00

Eric is right. Substantial amounts of wood will need to be removed from the lock mortise to fit the large L&R flat spring which takes the place of the T/C coil spring. Careful wood removal is required.

The lock in the picture is one of the old style TC flintlocks.
Some of these old style flintlocks tended to bash their flints shortening the flints life. To solve this problem, TC redesigned the cock (hammer) and frizzen for their later guns. They also reworked many of the locks on guns that had been sold and returned because of this flint bashing problem by switching out the old cock and frizzen for the newly designed ones.
Now that Smith & Wesson has bought Thompson Center they no longer do this.

Below is a picture of the new style cock. Notice the lower area below the flint is more of a large blob of metal rather than being like the earlier pronounced S shape.

If I was considering buying a TC Flintlock, this flint/cock problem would cause me to point it out to the seller and ask for at least a $75 price reduction.

Even at a $75 reduction, that wouldn't pay for a new L&R replacement lock but, there is a chance the old style lock on this gun will work without problems so I wouldn't feel right asking the seller to fully cover the cost of the replacement lock.

It looks more like Renegade than a Hawken. Track has a Renegade for sale for comparison.

Yes, Hawkens are 15/16” barrels and Renegades are 1” across the flats.

Some “Big Bore “ Hawkens are 1” across the flats.

I believe you're looking at the picture Eric posted of His rifle. I have replaced the old style lock on my T/C Hawken with one of the New style. I also replaced the T/C frizzen on that new style lock with a Lyman frizzen. That takes a little fitting but they can be purchased pre-modified and ready to "drop-in" to your lock. THAT lock functions great.
I'm intrigued by the Sharon Barrel. What is the length, twist rate and what sights are on it ??
That might add some extra value to the rifle to offset the need to simply replace the lock (which is what I'd do immediately if such a rifle fell into my hands.

Regardless of the style of lock it has on it the Flintlocks generally bring more than the Thompson Center percussion models.

Eric,I have a L&R for my Hawken,but have not installed it.I saw your pics of how much wood you had to remove to install it.I can do the inlet job, but do you think all that wood removal weakens the stock? Looks kinda spooky, the amount of wood removed!

as for value an 'as new" serial number 2xxx Hawken flinter is selling for north of 650.00 right now on a big auction site. (NOT my rifle). Might be so high because it is 45?

Last month I bought an "as new" unfired 1xxx numbered 50 cal Hawken for 350.00. I converted it to percussion though with a new NOS GM LRH stainless barrel, and a spare lock I collected to do it.
