For the period you mentioned, the bag would probably have been the typical rectangular or rounded bottom style, plain and with little external decoration. Some of the plainer bags did have some basic carving of the leather...straight lines, etc. Horns would also be tending toward the plain side, although some banded horns were found in the southern Atlantic area. You're looking for functional, not glitzy.
 
Banded horns, which are mostly found in the south, seem to have appeared in the very late 18th and early 19th centuries. I agree about the hunting bag being plan and of a standard pattern.
 
Mick's post shows excellent types of bags that I referred to in the original reply. Jeff Bibb's site also shows a couple of the banded powder horns found in the southern area at the time you indicated as well. A banded horn isn't necessary, they are a little more than a plain one, but are nice pieces of work. Good luck.

...there are a coupla guys here who really make some sweet leather stuff and put it in The Classifieds regularly.
