Ya know, you're right. I had a wedge that I used to set up with shear lashings and this wasn't a problem. I think it was because the angle of the shears was sufficient that the weight pushes the poles into the ground causing them to dig in.

However, with a wall tent the angle is much more obtuse and the weight seems to just collapse the shears rather than cause them to dig in.
 
I set up both an A and a wall together for our commissary and mess I've tried both ways and I myself prefer the upright poles.
