Your Schuetzen-style rifle is German, and was made by the Baader Company in Munich, Bavaria. FA is the German abbreviation for 'Firma' - a word used to denote a manufacturing company that often includes family members.

Baader u. Sohn - Baader and Son operated in Munich in the 1850-70 era. I can't find out any more about them, Sorry.

The accessories needed to shoot it include a palm rest, often looking like a ball, and the back sight - a tang-style device. It is VERY beautiful, IMO, and looks to be in fine condition. A similar but complete piece fetched around $1800 recently on a US-based auction house.

Thanks TFoley: most of that I knew but value was a something I was not clear on. I did find a very similar gun on Christie’s Auction house in London that was posted a while back. My father was a Counter Intelligence Officer (CIC) in the US Military from 1942 to 1963. The family lived off and on in Germany for 13 to 14 years. Besides other duties assigned to the CIC (rounding up Nazis) the CIC also monitored the Black Market. There was no legitimate economy left in Germany after the war. A stick of butter could get you a gun! Or, pretty much anything else. Rumor on this gun was it was found in an old farmhouse along with many other guns. Hmmmm. I kind of doubt that knowing how connected my father was. I have muskets, Merkels, Mannlichters, Waffen rifles, Mausers, Walthers, A broomstick, Leica and Zeiss optics from the 60’s. This gun was an oddity to his collection though and we have never fired it. We still use the M1903 6.5x54 Mannlicher Schoenauer occasionally for deer hunting. My father was a Jaeger in the Bayern district in the 50’s. His mentor was our “house man” in the attached picture. I was born in Nuremberg toward the end of his military career. There’s a Brown Bess and another flintlock in the collection too.
