Before filing down the sight or cutting away any wood, try shimming the sight first.
I made my shims out of aluminum for my Renegades. I cut them from a solid aluminum block. I made them the entire length of the peep sight. The shim on one of my Renegades is a lot thicker than the shim on my other Renegade. Shim heights will vary from gun to gun. It is mostly trial and error and a lot of filing down of the shims.
I had to drill and tap an extra hole in each one of my tangs order to install my 57SML sights.

Early ones had the 3 hole for tc hunter peep but the Willis and lyman fit it great also
